Empire Hotel
About Empire Hotel
The Empire Hotel, affectionately known as the "Grand Old Lady of the West," is a prominent heritage-listed establishment located at 2 Orr Street, Queenstown, Tasmania. Built in 1901 during the peak of the mining boom, it stands as a testament to the region's rich history and architectural grandeur.
Situated in the heart of Queenstown, the Empire Hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the West Coast. It's conveniently located near attractions such as the West Coast Wilderness Railway, which offers scenic steam train journeys through Tasmania's rugged landscapes.
Constructed by James Wilson of Zeehan for developers Parer and Higgins, the Empire Hotel has been a central figure in Queenstown's history. One of its most remarkable features is the National Trust-listed staircase, crafted from Tasmanian Blackwood.
The raw timber was shipped to England for carving and then returned to Queenstown for installation, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship of the era.
The hotel offers 24 accommodation rooms, ranging from single rooms with shared bathrooms to double and family rooms with ensuites, catering to various guest preferences.
One can enjoy a meal in the hotel's traditional dining room, which exudes historical charm. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily, offering a menu that highlights local Tasmanian produce. The cozy ambiance is enhanced by a fireplace, especially inviting during cooler months.
Additional facilities include a bar, gaming room with 20 machines, and a newly renovated bottle shop—the largest on Tasmania's West Coast. For mountain biking enthusiasts, the hotel provides brand-new facilities, including secure storage, washing and drying amenities, and maintenance areas.
