Established in late 1945 by Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (AEME) soldiers returning from World War II, this club is uniquely tied to its military roots.

Originally named the AEME Surf Life Saving Club, it was renamed in 1946 to Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC, preserving AEME to honour its founders.

The club’s iconic current building dates back to 1973, replacing earlier structures built from scavenged materials. It has since undergone four major upgrades, including the addition of a Supporters Association, restaurant, bar, and gaming facilities.

Provides patrolled beach services, with red-and-yellow flags marking safe swimming zones. Mermaid Beach spans about 2?km and can feature hazardous rips, making patrols essential.

Recognised as Australian Surf Life Saving Club of the Year in 2015 and 2022, and Queensland Club of the Year in 2014, 2015, and 2022. It also earned Queensland Youth Development Club of the Year in 2017.

The club maintains a strong focus on surf sports, Nippers (youth development), and inclusive community programs.

The Supporters Club operates a public-facing venue featuring:

• Merlina’s Restaurant: Open daily for lunch and dinner, with weekend breakfast service. Family-friendly, with an indoor playroom for children, and stunning ocean views from the balcony.
• Bar & Gaming Room: Offers a selection of craft beers, cocktails, wines, poker machines, Keno, and TAB.
• Functions & Events: The venue hosts weddings, corporate functions, live music nights, members’ draws, and weekly specials like “Kids Eat Free” Mondays.

Offers support, active, and family memberships.
