If you're gluten-free, living with Celiac disease, or following a vegan lifestyle, there's good news. Nutie—the much-loved gluten-free doughnut maker from Balmain—has opened a café in Surry Hills. In addition to their famous doughnuts, they now offer a full gluten- and grain-free breakfast and lunch menu.

Nutie launched its first store in Balmain in 2017 and expanded with a popular pop-up café on Pitt Street in 2018. Due to kitchen limitations at those venues, only coffee and baked treats were offered. The new Surry Hills location, however, features a full kitchen and a complete menu.

Located on Holt Street, the Surry Hills café serves up porridge, Scandinavian-style open toast, and even a vegan take on 'huevos rancheros'—all made without a trace of gluten. Many items are also vegan and dairy-free, including cakes, brownies, cookies, and tarts.

You’ll find flavours like lamington, lemon meringue, and s’more cookie sandwiches. Nutie also offers almond milk and dishes with a creative spin, such as a vegan Mexican omelette and Nordic-inspired open sandwiches.

The Art of Gluten-Free Baking

All items are baked fresh on-site daily. The café’s pastel-pink floors, charcoal walls, and glowing pink neon doughnut logo create a welcoming, modern vibe. Behind glass cabinets, an impressive array of treats—including brownie-crusted tarts, black bean fudge brownies, and cookie sandwiches—tempt visitors and takeaway customers alike.

Co-founders Sina Klug (a self-taught baker) and Jacques Dumont run the business together, having first gained a following at the Bondi Farmers Market. Their mission: to create allergy-friendly and plant-based baked goods that don’t compromise on taste.

Some of their most popular items happened by chance—like the “cookie monster” doughnut. What started as a fun kitchen experiment quickly went viral after a single Instagram post led to a surge in orders.

Klug explains that gluten-free baking is all about understanding how different nuts, flours, and starches react. They use in-house almond meal and almond milk, chickpea flour for cookies, and black beans for brownies.

Standouts on the vegan side include house-made vegan marshmallows and the “Couch Potato” doughnut—vanilla choc-chip topped with salted potato chips and rich Belgian dark chocolate.

Nutie currently supplies to 12 cafes across Sydney. Their savoury lunch menu includes cauliflower pizza, vegan salads, Buddha bowls, soups, and sandwiches.

With prices starting around $5 for a cookie, it’s easy to treat yourself—or splurge a little more.

Nutie is open at 44 Holt Street, Surry Hills from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday, and 8:00 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday.
