Prudence is a cozy, character-packed bar hiding in North Melbourne. Its eclectic interior, complete with vintage records and kitschy décor, really sets the tone.

Opened in 2000 in a former record store, Prudence still celebrates its musical roots, stacks of LPs behind the bar and staff spinning favourites nightly.

The décor is a bold blend of African and Balinese sculptures, taxidermy deer heads, ornate china, and baroque touches, it’s a kitschy delight, yet surprisingly warm and inviting.

What it offers

• Front room: Intimate booths, heavy curtains, low lighting, and even a chessboard add to the lounge-like feel.
• Courtyard: A large Viking-inspired beer garden with long communal tables, ideal for drinks in warmer months, and yes, it’s been lovingly rebuilt after a 2019 fire that damaged part of it.
• Upstairs: A maze of cozy nooks framed with gilded mirrors and chandeliers, bathed in a soft red glow.
